이 작업은 작품이 작가의 의도를 전달해야 한다는 전제로부터 출발하지 않는다. 작품이 관람자에게 무언가를 가르치거나 특정한 의미에 도달하도록 요구되는 순간 작품은 사물이 아니라 설명이 된다. 이 작업은 설명되기 이전의 상태로 존재하는 작품을 전제한다. 이른바 문자작업이라 불리는 이 작업에서 문장들은 메시지가 아니다. 작품에 놓인 문장들은 정확해 보이지만 실행될 수 없는 지시들로 이루어져 있으며 판단을 요구하지만 기준을 제공하지 않는다. 이 문장들은 의미를 전달하기보다 전시장 안에서 해석되고 오인되며 무력화되는 상태로 놓인다. 작가는 설치에 관여하지 않는다. 작품은 공간과 제도의 조건 그리고 타인의 판단에 따라 배치된다. 그 과정에서 힘이 없다고 전제된 문장들은 의도치 않게 권위를 획득하며 이 작업은 그 작동을 비판하거나 주장하지 않고 드러낸다. 관람자는 작품을 해석하기보다 작품을 통해 자신이 서 있는 공간을 바라보게 된다. 작품은 의미의 대상이 아니라 공간과 판단이 발생하는 계기로 존재한다. 이 작업은 무엇을 말하지 않는다.다만 작품이 의미를 요구받지 않은 채 존재할 수 있는 상태를 유지한다. This work does not begin from the premise that a work of art must convey the artist’s intention. The moment a work demands that the viewer learn something or arrive at a specific meaning it ceases to be an object and becomes an explanation. This work presupposes an artwork that exists prior to explanation. In what is referred to as this text-based work the sentences are not messages. The statements placed on the works appear precise yet consist of instructions that cannot be executed. They require judgment without providing criteria. Rather than transmitting meaning these sentences remain in a state of being interpreted misread and neutralized within the exhibition space. The artist does not intervene in the installation. The works are positioned according to the conditions of the space the institution and the judgments of others. In this process sentences assumed to be powerless inadvertently acquire authority. This work neither critiques nor asserts that authority but exposes its operation. Rather than interpreting the work the viewer comes to look at the space they are standing in through the work. The work exists not as a site of meaning but as a point at which space and judgment occur.
